Cannabis 101 — How to Make THC Oil for Vaping?

How to Make THC Oil for Vaping

THC vaping oil has become more popular in recent years. It is an alternative for many kinds of smokers. Some people believe that vaping can be better than smoking, so you might be wondering how you can make your own vaping oil. There are several options open to you.

How Do You Make Your Own THC Vaping Oil?

In some areas, you might not be able to get any type of marijuana besides the herb. That might be if cannabis is only legal for medicinal purposes in your area and you can only get certain forms of marijuana. If you want vape juice, your only option might be to make it.

But even if you can purchase your own vape oil, it can still be a fun process to make the oil yourself. Plus, you can determine just what goes into it. There are several simple methods of making your own. Each one involves extracting your THC oil from the bud and mixing it with vegetable glycerin (VG), propylene glycol (PG), or a combination of the two.

If you use extract instead of fresh cannabis, you can try using solventless waxes, such as rosin. However, you have to properly purge extracts that have solvents in them to make them safe for vaping.

Using Long-Term Extraction Method

This is a fairly easy method, but it can take a little while to do. It is hard to mess this up, and you only need to grind the marijuana buds and decarboxylate them. Then, you can mix them with your VG or PG and allow the mixture to sit for around three months.

You will need around 7 grams of bud per 80 millilitres of liquid. You can adjust this ratio a bit to get different strengths. You will also need PG and VG. First, turn the oven to around 120 degrees Celsius. Grind the bud evenly and spread it evenly across the pan. Next, cover the pan with foil.

Place the pan in the preheated oven and leave it there for around 40 minutes. Once it is done, you can take it out and let it cool.
As the cannabis is decarboxylating, mix the VG and PG. You can make whatever percentage you like, but you might want to have at least 50 percent VG. PG can bring more of the flavour out, so you might want to get a mix of around 60 percent VG and 40 percent PG. Using much more PG than this can be too harsh for some users.

Put the cooled cannabis in a jar and add the VG and PG mixture. There should be enough to fully cover the cannabis. Mix up the contents and put the lid on tightly. Put the jar in a dark, cool area for three months. Give it a shake every two weeks during this time. If you need to, add a bit more VG and PG to the jar.

After three months, take out the mixture and stir it a bit. Put a rice press over another jar and align it with some cheesecloth. Now, pour the mixture into your rice press and cover it with more cheesecloth. Squeeze out the mixture as much as you can. This mixture should enter the jar as a clean vaping oil. Add this to a bottle, then you can use it in your vaping device.

Short Term Extraction Method

Short-Term Extraction Method

This is a similar method to the first one, but you will use heat so you can speed up the process. You will be mixing the marijuana with the VG and PG mixture and adding it to a pot with some water. This will extract some of the THC from the marijuana because of the heat. You’ll also need a precise thermometer.

Decarboxylate the cannabis and mix it with the VG and PG in a jar, as you did in the first method. Then, put some water in a double boiler about half of an inch deep. Add some water to your second pot and put the double boiler on top. Then, heat the pot until the liquid in the double boiler is around 105 degrees Celsius.

Add the VG/PG and marijuana mixture that is in the jar to the double boiler. Let it heat to 85 degrees Celsius. Maintain this temperature, but do not go over. This allows the THC to bind to the VG/PG mixture without burning off the cannabinoids.

Once the temperature in your double boiler is around 85 degrees Celsius, you should leave it on your stove for at least an hour. But if you want it to be as potent as possible, you can leave it there for two to four hours. Just make sure that it is at a safe temperature, and you can experiment with the amount of time you like.

Just make sure that you mix it frequently. Add more VG and PG if it seems to be too dry. But do not add too much since that might weaken your mixture a bit. Once you are pleased with the mixture, you can take it out of the pot and allow it to cool.

When it is still warm enough to flow well, you can take the cheesecloth and rice press to strain it. Put several layers of cheesecloth in the press. Hold it over a bowl and pour the mixture through the press. Allow it to drain as much as you can and cover the top with some more cheesecloth. Squeeze the mixture into your bowl more.

Now, using your syringe, you can remove the vape oil from your jar and put it in the bottle for vape liquid. Then, add it to your favourite vaping device to enjoy a vaping session. You might try experimenting with different mixtures of VG and PG to change the potency.

Closing Thoughts

Making your own e-liquid is fairly easy if you use the methods above. Then, you can get a better hit. Just make sure that the cannabis gets decarboxylated. That way, you can activate the psychoactive substances, so you will get a good high.
